Postapocalyptic Winter Wonderland

Rolling Acres Mall in Akron, Ohio, was open from 1975 until 2011. While it boasted more than 140 stores (including five anchor stores, a movie theater and a food court) in its heyday, its slow decline ended in dereliction. However, as CONSUMERIST explained, a “postapocalyptic winter wonderland” was made possible after its glass skylights broke. Taken by local photographer Johnny Joo of Architectural Afterlife (architecturalafterlife.com, where there are many other fascinating photos in this vein), the snowscape features both an escalator and a panoramic elevator. Joo added, “Broken windows, a few trashed shopping carts, piles upon piles of glass, decay, rotted foliage, security office porno magazines (yeah, really) and a destroyed skeleton of what was once a fountain is all that now remains of this structure.”
